Text: by John Casken, drawn from First World War poets, Remembrance Day Service, the personal diary of a soldier who fought in the trenches, and using the names of twelve men from Upper Coquetdale, Northumberland who perished and have no graves

Premiere: 2 August, 2014, Alwinton, St Michael and All Angels Church, Conductor John Casken,
Coquetdale Chamber Choir, Lucy Hall (soprano), Philip Smith (baritone)

Audience feedback November 2018:

‘What a stunning piece it is and a wonderful memorial to the men [First World War soldiers] mentioned. I thought the text was inspiring in itself but the texture of voice with percussion was sublime and I have been thinking about it all day. It was quite beautiful how the music built up to ‘In foreign fields’ and came to such a perfect conclusion in ‘We will remember’.

I drove back from Manchester to London in the driving rain last night sustained by John’s magnificent piece.’
